Wilson, Penalty Kill Lead Preds to Preseason Win

The Predators defeat the Washington Capitals 4-1 to increase their preseason record to 5-1.

Colin Wilson continued his preseason resurgence as the Nashville Predators increased their preseason record to 5-1.

In a preseason game that featured the return of former Predators Joel Ward and Tomas Vokoun, Nashville downed the Washington Capitals 4-1.

Washington’s Mathieu Perrault put the Capitals on the board first at 6:41 of the first period, beating Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne on a goal assisted by Brooks Laich and Troy Brouwer. It would turn out to be the Capitals’ only goal of the game.

Wilson tied the game up at a little over 7 minutes later, scoring his third goal of the preseason at 13:52 of the first stanza beating Vokoun. The goal began with a defensive play by Wilson to take the puck from a Washington skater.

“I just lifted the guy’s stick,” Wilson said. “I took it out and made the play to Bergfors, he slid it open to (David Legwand). It was just kind of bouncing and moved to the forehand.”

Matt Halischuk gave the Predators the lead at 8:02 of the second period on assists from Jordin Tootoo and Nick Spaling.

Shea Weber scored on a tape-to-tape Martin Erat pass at 14:37 of the second. Rookie Craig Smith picked up the second assist.

At 16:32 of the third, Cal O’Reilly scored an insurance power-play goal from Weber with Smith picking up his second helper of the night.

Nashville’s penalty kill also played a large factor in the game’s outcome, killing off 5 Capitals power plays.

“They made it difficult for us to create any offense because usually we like to get shots off the bat and create confusion,” Capitals defenseman Mike Green said.

Rinne was the winning goaltender, playing the full game for Nashville and saving 23 of 24 shots. Vokoun took the loss for Washington, saving 23 of 27 shots.

“I look forward to seeing them again for a little bit of revenge,” Ward said.
