The Last Stop: Spaling Scores, Predators Lose in Regulation

Nick Spaling had scored 18 goals in 15 career games before Friday night. Each time he had scored the Nashville Predators made it through regulation at least tied with their opponent.

Fifteen straight times that Spaling had scored a goal, the Predators came away with a win or a point.

A goal by Spaling at 14:58 of the second period against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on Friday night pulled the Predators even at 1 in the game. It was the third road goal of Spaling’s career.

However, on this night, it was not to be.

While the Predators maintained a tie with the Red Wings for nearly the entire duration of the game after Spaling’s tally, a late deke by Pavel Datsyuk around Ryan Suter as the seconds ticked off the clock in the third period was a dagger in the heart and the game-winner.

For the first time in his NHL career, Nick Spaling had scored a goal and his team had nothing to show for it.

The Predators were downed 2-1 by the Detroit Red Wings, who tied an NHL record with their 22nd consecutive home win.
